Accessibility statement
I want this website to work for everyone. That includes people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, zoom, or other tools.
What you can do on this site
- Use the Accessibility button at the top. The settings are in groups:
- Colours and text size: dark, light or high contrast, and four text sizes.
- Font: the default, Atkinson Hyperlegible (made for low vision) or OpenDyslexic.
- Seeing: grey only (no colour), and colour-blind safe map colours.
- Reading: extra line spacing, extra letter spacing, a reading guide that follows your mouse, finger or keyboard, underlined links, and Easy read short summaries.
- Moving and clicking: pause all motion (this also stops videos and map animation), and bigger buttons and links.
- Listening: read the page aloud using your device's own voice.
- Your choices are saved in your browser. Use Reset to default to undo them.
- The Need help? page explains everything step by step.
- Use the whole site with a keyboard. Press Tab to move. A clear outline shows where you are.
- Read the short Easy read summary on the home page.
- Zoom up to 400% without losing content.
- The site still works with JavaScript turned off. Your settings and the photo list need it, though.
- The before and after slider works with a mouse, touch, or the arrow keys (Home and End jump to each end).
- The map pins use a shape and a symbol, not only colour: a round pin with a tick is cleaned, a diamond with ! is reported. Every pin is also listed in text under the map.
- The Report a spot form has clear labels, tells you what's wrong if a box needs fixing, and works without JavaScript.
- Videos never play on their own. They have controls. Every video with talking should have captions or a transcript. If one doesn't yet, it says "Captions coming soon".
How accessible this site is
I aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, and level AAA where I can.
I have checked the site with automatic testing tools. Automatic tools can't find every problem, so I'm still doing checks by hand.
Deaf and hard of hearing
You never need sound to use this site, and you can always contact me in writing. There are no British Sign Language (BSL) videos yet. If a BSL version would help you, please email and ask.
Clean-up events
When I plan a group clean-up, I'll say what I know about getting there: step-free access, toilets nearby, and seating. If something isn't listed, I haven't checked it yet. Please ask.
What isn't perfect yet
- Videos from YouTube, Instagram and TikTok are shown using those sites' own players. I can't fully control how accessible they are.
- Some older videos may not have captions yet.
- Photo descriptions are written by me. Some may be short.
- The map uses OpenStreetMap tiles. The map picture itself can't be read by a screen reader, so use the list of spots under it.
Tell me about a problem
If something doesn't work for you, please tell me. Email me at hello@ayrshirecleans.co.uk, or send a message on the Ayrshire Cleans Facebook group. Tell me which page, and what went wrong. I'll do my best to fix it.
